Have You Heard of These 8 Types of Audio Noise?

In the field of audio equipment installation and maintenance, various types of noise can arise. Understanding their characteristics is essential for identifying issues early and implementing the right solutions.

This article provides a brief overview of eight common types of noise encountered in audio work.

Types of Audio Noise

  • White Noise

Noise that is evenly distributed across the entire audible frequency range (20Hz–20kHz). It sounds like the static from a TV without a signal or the noise from an untuned radio.

  • Pink Noise

Compared to white noise, pink noise has a gradual decrease in energy at higher frequencies(-3 dB/oct), emphasizing lower frequencies and sounding like waterfalls or heavy rain.

  • Brown Noise

A type of noise that emphasizes even lower frequencies than pink noise(-6 dB/oct). It has a deeper sound, similar to distant thunder.

  • Hum Noise

A low-frequency sound often heard in audio and electronic equipment, resembling a humming sound made with closed lips.

  • Buzz Noise

A type of noise that contains higher frequency components compared to hum noise, often resulting in a sharper or more electrical sound.

  • Hiss Noise

A noise that contains a large amount of high-frequency components, often sounding like a "shhh" or the sound of steam.

  • Click Noise

Intermittent sounds that often occur due to connection issues or old equipment.

  • Pop Noise

Intermittent sounds that often occur due to connection issues or old equipment.

These noises occur due to various factors during the equipment connection. Understanding the noise generated by audio equipment makes it easier to identify the causes.
